The Breaks
Written by Jalyn Jack Anderson

Logline
In 1990s Bay Area California, three teenage outcasts form a hip-hop group and chase a record deal, but as their moment of truth approaches, creative tension and the harsh reality of the industry threaten to break them apart.
Series Overview
The Breaks is a coming-of-age dramedy set during the Bay Area’s vibrant early-90s hip-hop scene, at the dawn of rap’s golden age. The story centers on Greg, a teenager navigating his identity through music, and his two best friends: Rico, a fiery emcee, and Bobby, a laid-back DJ. Together, they form RGB, three kids with raw talent and big dreams. When they learn about a major industry showcase at the legendary Palladium, the group races to finish a demo tape in time to qualify. But with rising friction between Rico and Greg over creative control, Greg’s new relationship pulling focus, and limited access to gear and studios, their biggest challenge isn’t the music, it’s staying together long enough to be heard. The Breaks is designed as a limited, one-season arc spanning 8–10 episodes, culminating in RGB’s showcase performance, where they confront the hard truth that talent alone may not be enough to break through.
Tone & Audience
With the emotional resonance of The Wonder Years, the humor and social edge of Everybody Hates Chris, and the stylistic energy of Dope, The Breaks blends nostalgic warmth with sharp cultural commentary. It’s a love letter to hip-hop, friendship, and the awkward, beautiful chaos of chasing a dream before you even know who you are.
